Making Energy Efficiency Accessible for All

The pace of change in the home energy sector has been extraordinary. New technologies, new incentives, and new ways of supporting households are emerging faster than ever. Over the past year, as a Victorian Scorecard home energy assessor, I’ve seen firsthand how staying up to date doesn’t just improve my practice—it directly benefits the people and communities I work with.

This year has been a genuine eye‑opener, revealing just how dynamic, impactful, and rewarding this field can be.

From Paid Service to Free Access: A Genuine Game Changer

When I began my training two years ago, I expected to mostly support homeowners who could afford the typical $400–$600 assessment fee. But by the time I completed my Scorecard training, everything had shifted.

A new model emerged: home energy assessments became completely free, funded through the two VEECs (Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates) generated by each assessment.

Instead of clients paying out of pocket, assessors are paid through VEECs—making the service accessible to households who previously couldn’t consider it.

For many families, this shift has been transformative.

Why Free Energy Assessments Matter (and Who Benefits Most)

The people who gain the most from personalised energy advice are often the ones who’ve had the least access to it:

  • Low‑income households
  • Renters
  • Pensioners
  • Families doing it tough
  • People living in older, draughty homes

These households feel rising energy costs every single day. Free Scorecard assessments help them:

  • Reduce energy bills
  • Improve comfort and liveability
  • Understand where their energy (and money) is going
  • Identify small, affordable improvements
  • Know what to request from landlords
  • Make informed choices when moving to a new rental

The most rewarding part of this work is helping people understand their energy use and discover practical ways to lower costs. This is exactly where Scorecard assessments deliver the greatest value.

A Special Shout‑Out to Renters

Renters often face the toughest conditions: cold rooms, ageing appliances, rattly windows, and limited control over upgrades—yet they’re the ones paying the bills.

Free Scorecard assessments have allowed me to support renters with realistic, achievable steps that genuinely improve comfort and affordability, even when major renovations aren’t possible.

Looking Ahead: Partnering With Community Services

I’m currently exploring partnerships with financial counselling services, neighbourhood houses, and community support organisations. These groups already assist people under financial pressure, and energy bills are a major part of that stress.

By integrating home energy assessments into their support programs, we can help households build long‑term resilience and reduce ongoing costs.

My goal is simple:

Make energy efficiency advice a standard part of wellbeing support—not a luxury for those who can afford it.

Towards a Fairer, Greener, More Resilient Community

Every energy‑efficient home contributes to:

  • Lower household bills
  • Reduced emissions
  • Healthier, more comfortable living spaces

When everyone—not just those with deep pockets—can access energy advice, the whole community benefits. Stronger, healthier, more sustainable neighbourhoods start with equitable access.

A fairer, greener future truly begins at home.

Let’s Chat

If you know someone who could benefit from a free home energy assessment—or if your organisation supports people doing it tough—I’d love to connect. Together, we can help make homes warmer, more comfortable, and more affordable for everyone.
